Fathima Beevi Bio

M. Fathima Beevi is a well-known former judge of the Supreme Court of India as she became the first female judge to be part of the Supreme Court of India. She was appointed to the apex court in 1989 and she was the first Muslim woman to be appointed to any of the higher judiciaries in our country. After she retired from the court, she served as a National Human Rights Commission member. Then from 1997 to 2003, she served as Governor of Tamil Nadu.

Early life and Education

Fathima Beevi was born on 30 April 1927 in Pathanamthitta, Kingdom of Travancore, British India. She is currently 94 years old as of 2021. She is the daughter of Annaveettil Sahib and Khadeeja Beevi.

She completed her schooling at Town School and Catholic High School in Pathanamthitta. Later, she completed her BSc in chemistry from University College in Thiruvananthapuram. She earned her B.L. from Government Law College in Thiruvananthapuram.

Career as a Judge

On 14 November 1950, she was enrolled as an advocate. She topped the Bar Council exam in 1950 and started her career in the lower judiciary in Kerala. In May 1958, she was appointed as the Munsiff in the Kerala subordinate judicial services. Then in 1968, she was promoted as subordinate and in 1972, she became the chief judicial magistrate. In 1974, she became the District and session judge.

In January 1980, she was appointed as the judicial member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. Then on 14 August 1983, she was promoted to the High Court as a judge. Later on, 14 May 1984, she became the permanent judge of the High Court. Then on 29th April 1989, she retired as a Judge of the High Court but later she was promoted to Supreme court as a Judge on 6 October 1988. She served that position till 29 April 1992 and then she retired from that position as well.

Governor of Tamil Nadu

Then from 1993 to 1997, she served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission of India. On 25 January 1997, she became the 11th Governor of Tamil Nadu. She served in that position till 3 July 2001.

As a Governor of the state, she also served as the Chancellor of Madras University.

Some parties also discussed the nomination of Fathima Beevi as the President of India but at that time the NDA government proposed the name of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

Awards

In 1990, she was awarded, Hon. D Litt and Mahila Shiromani Award. Moreover, she also received Bharat Jyoti Award.
