Nafisa Ali Bio
Nafisa Ali is an Indian actress and politician who served as a member of the All India Trinamool Congress. She is also a social activist. Before that, she has also served as a member of the Indian National Congress. So, she is an actress, model, and politician by profession.
Early life and Education
Nafisa Ali was born on 18 January 1957 in Kolkata, West Bengal. She is currently 65 years old as of 2022. She is the daughter of Ahmed Ali who was a Bengali Muslim and Philomena Torresan who was a Roman Catholic woman of Anglo Indian heritage. Her mother is now settled in Australia. Her paternal grandfather was Wajid Ali who was a prominent Bengali writer and her paternal aunt Zaib-un-Nissa Hamidullah was a Pakistani journalist and feminist.
She completed her education from Sr. Cambridge from La Martiniere, Calcutta. She also studied Vedanta by Guru Swami Chinmayanand who started the center Chinmaya Mission of World Understanding.
Acting Career
She has gained accomplishments in several fields. From 1972 to 1974, she was the national swimming champion. Then in 1976, she won the Femina Miss India title representing India at the Miss International contest and she was declared the 2nd runner up. After that in 1979, she was a jockey at the Calcutta Gymkhana.
Besides this, she has acted in several Bollywood movies. Some of her notable movies include Junoon, Major Saab, Bewafa, Life In A….Metro and YamlaPagla Deewana. She has also acted in the Malayalam film named Big B.
Political career
In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, she contested unsuccessfully from South Kolkata. Then on 5 April 2009, she contested the Lok Sabha election from Lucknow on a ticket of Samajwadi Party after the disqualification of Sanjay Dutt by the Supreme court. Then in November 2009, she again rejoined the Indian National Congress and she said that she is returning to Congress for life. However, after that in October 2021, she joined the All India Trinamool Congress ahead of the 2022 Goa Legislative Assembly election.
Personal life
She married Colonel Ravinder Singh Sodhi who was the Polo player and he won the Arjuna Award. They have two daughters Armana and Pia and one son Ajit. After her marriage, she chose to stop working so she took a break of 18 years and then returned to the film industry.
In November 2018, she was diagnosed with 3 stages of peritoneal and ovarian cancer.
