Imtiaz Ali is an Indian film director, producer, actor, and writer who predominantly works in Hindi films. He began his career writing and directing television serials. Some of his popular television shows are Imtehaan, Naina, and Kurukshetra. He made his film directorial debut with the movie Socha Na Tha which was released in 2005, but the film did not succeed at the box office. Then in 2007, he directed the movie Jab We Met which acquired both critical and commercial success at the box office. Early life and Educational Qualifications
Imtiaz Ali was born on 16 June 1971 in Jamshedpur, Bihar, India which is presently known as Jharkhand. He spent his childhood in Patna. He belongs to a Muslim family his father’s name was Mansoor Ali who was a contractor. As his father did irrigation jobs, Imtiaz sometimes accompanied him which gave him knowledge about the situation in India.
He began his early education at St Michael’s High School, Patna, and later completed his schooling at DBMS English School, Jamshedpur. He studied at the Hindu College University of Delhi. He also took part in college theatre which made him very popular in college. He also joined Ibtida, which is the dramatics society of Hindu College, Delhi. After completing college he moved to Mumbai where he did a diploma course at Xavier institute of communication.
Personal life of Imtiaz Ali
Imtiaz got married to Preeti Ali and the couple has a daughter together named Ida Ali, who is also a film director. Currently, Imtiaz is 50 years old.
His uncle Khali Rehmat is a Pakistani TV actor, director, and producer. Also has a brother named Arif Ali who is a director and made his first directorial debut with the movie Lekar Hum Deewana Dil.
Directorial Career in Movies and Tv shows
Imtiaz started his career by directing TV shows which include Kurukshetra from Zee TV and Imtihan from Doordarshan. Later, he started directing Bollywood movies. He made his directorial debut with the movie Socha Na Tha in 2005. The lead roles in the movie included Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia and it took him 3 years to make the film. His second film was Jab We Met which was released in 2007 the movie star cast included Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor who were a real-life couple at that time. The movie was a commercial success at the box office. Later in 2009, he directed the movie Love Aaj Kal which starred Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. The movie was the biggest commercial success at the box office to date. His next movie was Rockstar which was released in 2011 and the lead star cast of the movie was Ranbir Kapoor. The movie got mixed reviews and was a semi-hit at the box office.
He established his film production company named Window Seat Films. The first release of the production company was the movie highway starring Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt. The movie did average at the box office and was appreciated by critics and is considered as one of his best films. Later in 2015, he directed the movie Tamasha. The lead star cast of the movie was Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. The movie got mixed reviews but was a flop at the box office. Next in August 2017, he worked in Jab Harry Met Sejal, including Shahrukh Khan and Anushka Sharma as the lead star cast of the movie. The movie got negative reviews in India and was an utter flop at the box office, however, the movie did well overseas. And then after 3 years on 14 February 2020, his next directorial venture Love Aaj Kal was released. As the movie was released during the pandemic it still managed to stay and got mixed reviews from the critics.
