Vyjayanthimala is a very popular former Indian actress, dancer, and parliamentarian. She was a prolific and influential performer during the Golden age of Hindi cinema. At the age of 13, she made her screen debut with a Tamil film named Vaazhkai in 1949. Her first Hindi film was Bahar in 1951. She gained critical acclaim for her role in the movie Devdas in 1955. After retiring from the acting industry, she started her Political career in 1984. She has worked both in Indian National Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party. She has served as a member of both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.
Early life and Education
Vyjayanthimala Raman was born on 13 August 1936 in Triplicane, Madras Presidency, British India. She is currently 85 years old as of 2021. She was born in the Tamil Iyengar Brahmin family to Mandyam Dhati Raman and Vasundhara Devi. Her mother was a leading actress in Tamil cinema in the 1940s.
She completed her education at Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Presentation Convent in Chennai. She learned Bharatanatyam from Guru Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai and she also learned Carnatic music from ManakkalSivaraja Iyer.
Personal life
She was subjected to many controversies related to her relationships with her co-stars. But in 1968, she married Chamanlal Bali who was already married. He was a Punjabi Hindu Arya Samaj from Delhi but lived in Anna Salai in Chennai. After her marriage, she gave up on her acting career and moved to Chennai. They have a son named Suchindra Bali. Her husband died in 1986.
Film Career
She has acted in many films of Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema. Her first Tamil film was Vaazhkai and her first Telugu film was Jeevi tham. She acted in the social guidance film Bahar which was her first Hindi film. Some of the most popular movies include Nagin, Devdas, Yasmin, Naya Daur, Kathputli, Sadhana, Madhumati, Gunga Jamuna, Sangam and many more.

Political Career
She started her political career in 1984 when she contested the 1984 Tamil Nadu general election for the South Chennai constituency. She was the candidate of the Indian National Congress at that time. She won that election and subsequently, she became a member of the Lok Sabha, the directly elected lower house of the Parliament of India by the end of January 1985 with Amitabh Bacchan.
Then again in 1989, she contested the 1989 Tamil Nadu general election and she again won. This time she was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the Upper house of the Parliament for a six-year term. Then in 1999, she resigned from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress.
Later on 6th September 1999, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

She is the recipient of several awards including two BFJA Awards and five Film fare Awards. She has also received Padma shri, Kalai mamani, San geet Natak Ak ademi Award, and many more.
