Mumtaz Begum Bio
Mumtaz Begum is a former Mayor of Bangalore. She was the first Muslim Mayor of Bangalore and overall the fourth woman mayor. On 30 November 2005, she was elected as 43rd mayor. Moreover, she served as a corporation of the Bangalore Mahanagar Palika (BMP) three times. She represented Shivajinagar ward, a part of the British Cantonment during colonial rule. She was a member of the Indian National Congress party and in 1984, she was elected as a Deputy Mayor of Bangalore city Corporation, when she contested as a candidate of Janatha Party.
She was born in 1956. She is currently 66 years old.
Political Career
Mumtaz Begum joined the Janatha party. In 1984, for the first time, she was elected as corporator. Then in 1984, she became the Deputy Mayor. After that in 1988, she migrated to the Congress Party and in 1990 she was elected as the Corporator for the second time.
So overall she held many posts. From 1991 to 1995, she became the General Secretary of the Ladies Wing in the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. From 1993 to 1997, she was the President of the Block Congress committee in Shivajinagar, Bangalore.
From 1995 to 1997, she served as General Secretary of the Bangalore City District Congress Committee. After that from 1997 to 2002, she was the General Secretary of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.
In 2001, she became the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Appeals. In 2003, she became a member of the Standing Committee on Education and Social Justice. From 2000 to 2005, she was the Executive Committee member of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. Later from 2005 to 2006, she served as Mayor of Bangalore Mahanagar Palika (BMP).
World Mayor Nominee
In 2006, Mumtaz Begum was listed in the list of finalists for the World Mayor title which is conducted once in two years by the City Mayors Foundation in London.
