Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya Bio
Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya was the second woman officer in the Indian police service (IPS) and the first was Kiran Bedi. She was from the 1973 batch IPS officer. Moreover, she was the first woman to become Director-General of Police of a state and after 33 years of service, she retired on 31 October 2007. Then, in the 2014 Indian General election, she joined politics and participated as a candidate of the Aam Aadmi Party from Haridwar, Uttarakhand.
Early life and Education
Chaudhary was born in 1947 in Himachal and lived in Amritsar and Delhi. She was the first daughter of Madan Mohan Choudhary. She completed her education at Government College for Women in Amritsar. Later, she did her MA in English literature from Indraprastha College, Delhi University. After that, in 1993, she obtained an MBA degree from the University of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia.
Career
She spent her 33 years in the Indian Police Service. She was the second woman to become an IPS officer and in her batch, she was the only female trainee. She was the first female IPS officer in Uttar Pradesh and was the first female appointed as Deputy General Inspector of Police in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. Later, she was promoted to be first Inspector General of Uttar Pradesh Police. She was also the first woman to serve as Additional Director General of Police in Uttaranchal.
She handled many cases in her career including the murder of Syed Modi in 1987 who was a seven-time National Badminton champion and the Reliance Bombay Dyeing case in 1989.
When she was Assistant Superintendent of Police in Malihabad, she track down 13 decoits in a single year. She was also selected to represent India in the 2004 Interpol meeting in Mexico. Moreover, on 27 July 2005, she hosted the second women in police conference in Mussoorie where the chief guest was the President of India, APJ Abdul Kalam.
Personal life
She married Dev Bhattacharya and they have two children. Her other interests include writing and poetry and participating in dramatics.
She made a guest appearance in the TV series Udaan which was inspired by her life.
Awards
In 1989, she was awarded the President’s Medal for her Long and Meritorious services. Then in 1997, she was given the President’s medal for Distinguished services. Later in 2004, she received the Rajiv Gandhi Award for Excellence All Round Performance and as an Outstanding Woman Achiever.

Death
On 26 August 2019, she died in Mumbai at a hospital. She was receiving care for the previous five to six months. On 27th August, an official tribute event was held at the department’s headquarters for her.
