Ambika Soni Bio

Ambika Soni is an Indian politician who is a member of the Indian National Congress. She served as a Minister of Information and Broadcasting. Presently, she is a Member of Parliament and she represents the state of Punjab in the Rajya Sabha.

Early life and Education

Ambika Soni was born on 13 November 1942 in Lahore, Punjab, British India. She is currently 79 years old as of 202. She was born when Lahore was undivided with Punjab. Her father’s name was Nakul Sen Wadhwa who was an Indian civil service officer and Lt. Governor of Goa in 1942. She completed her education at Welham Girls School in Dehradun. Later, she did her MA Hons. from Indraprastha College, Delhi University. Following that, she did a diploma in Superioreen Language Franchise from Alliance Francaise, Bangalore, and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Spanish Art and Literature from the University of Havana, Cuba.

Political career

In 1969, she started her political career when she was chosen by Indira Gandhi into the Congress party at the time of the split in the same year. She was an old family friend of Gandhi as her father was posted as District Collector of Amritsar during the partition of India and he worked closely with Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1975, she became President of the Indian Youth Congress and she worked with Sanjay Gandhi. Then in March 1976, she became a member of the Rajya Sabha. Later, in 1998, she served as President of the All India Mahila Congress. From 1999 to 2006, she served as General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee.

Then in January 2003, she was re-elected to Rajya Sabha but she resigned on 10 June 2004. Later in July 2004, she was again elected to Rajya Sabha. Then from 29 January 2006 to 22 May 2009, she served as Minister of Tourism and Minister of culture in the UPA I government. Later from 22 May 2009 to 27 October 2012, she served as Minister of Information and Broadcasting in the UPA II government. Again in July 2010, she was elected to Rajya Sabha.

Personal life

In 1961, she married Uday Soni who was an Indian Foreign Service officer. They have one son named Anup Soni. She resides in New Delhi.
